Participatory Data-Driven Maintenance - A Case of Gravel Roads
Gravel roads in Sweden, situated mainly in rural areas, are crucial in facilitating transportation for rural residents and entrepreneurs, and their faster deterioration necessitates regular condition monitoring to maintain the required service level. Exacerbated by their remote locations, their condition assessment prompts exploring data-driven approaches for sustainable road management. A participatory data collection method is proposed to mitigate monitoring costs by involving stakeholders like garbage collectors, postal services, road owners and users equipped with relevant data acquisition devices to collect road condition data during routine acctivities. The collected data is shared with authorities for processing, assessment, prognosis, and decision support, thus offering a cost-effective solution. This session explores integrating open data collection principles, aligning with sustainability practices and enabling long-term planning based on accurate, real-time data.
